Sesquiquadrate

135°, 3/8

The sesquiquadrate is a 135° aspect, a square plus a semisquare, in the 8th-harmonic family that Kepler argued for and cosmobiologists rely on. It describes two planets that clash at a distance, so the strain tends to arrive through other people, deadlines and situations that force a change of plan.

The essential reading

The sesquiquadrate is the companion to the semi-square: both belong to the eighth harmonic series. Where the semi-square produces internal friction, the sesquiquadrate tends to manifest as external disruption — obstacles, interference, and irritants that originate outside the native. It carries a karmic quality in traditional interpretation, as if circumstances conspire to challenge the native in the area governed by the two planets.

Developmental arc

Agitation

Learning to navigate persistent external disruptions without becoming reactive or defeated. The sesquiquadrate asks the native to respond to agitation from the outside world with composure and strategic adjustment rather than frustration or resistance.

Well integrated

Resilience and adaptability in the face of recurring external friction. The native who has integrated this aspect becomes genuinely skilled at operating under conditions of disruption.

Unresolved

Recurring external conflicts, interference from others, or a pattern of being blocked in the matters governed by the planets. The native may feel victimised by circumstance or perpetually disrupted by factors outside their control.

Interpretive contexts

  • A lasting pattern in one person

    Natal chart

A background source of external tension. Less defining than a square but more consistently present in the life as a subtle recurring friction in the areas it governs.

  • A moving planet meets a natal one

    Transit

Can trigger external disruptions, minor conflicts, or irritating obstacles. Most significant when both the sesquiquadrate and a semi-square from the same transiting planet are in effect simultaneously — together they form a 'hammer' configuration.

  • One person’s planet meets another’s

    Synastry

Contributes a note of recurring external friction between two people. Often produces petty irritants or misunderstandings that erode goodwill over time if not addressed.

What the sesquiquadrate means

A sesquiquadrate joins two planets about 135° apart. The name means “a square and a half”: one square of 90° plus one semisquare of 45°, or three eighths of the circle. It sits between the easy-flowing trine at 120° and the awkward quincunx at 150°, and it carries the drive of the square family rather than the ease of its neighbour.

Astrologers who use it read the sesquiquadrate as friction that shows up from outside before it is felt inside. Picture Jupiter sesquiquadrate Saturn in a small-business owner: she rarely feels torn between growth and caution, yet every second year a landlord, a lender or a tax change forces exactly that choice on her. The practical step is to recognise the repeat, name the two planets involved and prepare a response before the next round arrives.

  • Correction under pressure. Mercury sesquiquadrate Saturn: a writer whose editor keeps returning drafts, and who ends up with a far tighter book than she would have produced alone.
  • Stamina for disruption. Mars sesquiquadrate Uranus: an emergency nurse who stays useful when the shift plan collapses, because sudden change is familiar ground.
  • Overreach. Venus sesquiquadrate Jupiter: booking the expensive holiday, then the expensive dinner, then struggling with the card bill for months.
  • Blaming circumstances. Moon sesquiquadrate Saturn: feeling that family duties always land at the worst moment, without noticing a pattern of agreeing to too much.

The sesquiquadrate measures 135°, three eighths of the circle, so it belongs to the 8th harmonic. Cut the circle into eight equal slices of 45° and count: one slice is the semisquare, two the square, three the sesquiquadrate and four the opposition. Harmonic astrologers read the number eight as two doubled twice, the theme of effort and separation pressed further, which is why every step of this series counts as a hard aspect.

Two possible sign relationships. 135° is four and a half signs, so the planets fall either four signs apart or five. Four apart puts them in the same element, a trine by sign; five apart gives a quincunx by sign, with no shared element or modality. Our worked example is the first kind: Taurus and Virgo are both Earth and both yin, one fixed and one mutable. By contrast, Sun at 25° Aries and Mars at 10° Scorpio are also 135° apart, yet Fire and Water five signs apart share nothing. Read the signs one by one.

Applying or separating? The Moon travels about 13° a day; Pluto barely moves. The Moon is behind Pluto in the zodiac and gaining on it, so the 134° gap keeps shrinking, away from 135°. The aspect is therefore separating: it was exact less than two hours earlier. Roughly a day later the gap reaches 120° and the Moon forms a trine to Pluto.

Inner-planet limits. Mercury stays within about 28° of the Sun and Venus within about 47°, so the Sun–Mercury, Sun–Venus and Mercury–Venus pairs can never form a sesquiquadrate in a birth chart.

What that means
Ptolemy did not list it. Johannes Kepler named the sesquiquadrate among the new aspects he argued for in Harmonice Mundi (1619), and it joined the expanded set built on Ptolemy’s.
Also called
Sesquisquare, trioctile

Hellenistic astrologers configured whole signs, so a 135° pair registered only as a trine by sign or as signs in aversion. William Lilly’s moieties were designed for Ptolemy’s aspects, not this one. Modern astrologers who include it usually allow 2–3°. Cosmobiology, Reinhold Ebertin’s school, uses a 90° dial on which it overlays the semisquare, square and opposition as one family; Alfred Witte’s Uranian school adds 22.5° steps. Both keep orbs to a degree or two.

Natal, transit and synastry at a glance

In a birth chart

Look for a life theme that keeps being interrupted from outside. Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn: relationships that repeatedly run into practical obstacles such as distance, money or a partner’s job, and a person who grows patient and resourceful as a result.

As a transit

An event that forces a correction. Transiting Mars sesquiquadrate natal Sun might coincide with a colleague challenging your plan in a meeting. Concede what is fair, then defend the core of it in writing.

Between two charts

His Jupiter sesquiquadrate her Moon: his big plans unsettle her need for security, and she feels like the brake. Agreeing a monthly budget and one shared adventure a season keeps both needs visible.
