Grace, harmonic aspect

Novile

40°, 1/9

The novile is a 40° aspect, one ninth of the zodiac circle. Harmonic astrologers following John Addey read it as a link two planets grow into through long commitment, pointing to where life comes to feel settled, enjoyable and right; use a tight orb and test it against what the person has actually lived.

The essential reading

The novile belongs to the ninth harmonic series (360/9 = 40°). Nine is the number of completion, gestation, and spiritual harvest across numerous traditions. The novile indicates a blessed, spiritually ripe connection between two planetary principles — a quality of grace, completion, or sacred potential. It is associated with the culmination of a longer cycle and the emergence of spiritual fruit.

Developmental arc

Completion

Receiving and transmitting spiritual grace through the planetary principles involved. The novile is a rare but significant indicator of genuine spiritual development and completion. Unlike the septile's compulsive quality, the novile has a quality of earned grace or blessing.

Well integrated

A sense of spiritual completion, blessing, or sacred purpose in the matters governed by the planets. The native may have a particular gift for transmitting healing, wisdom, or creative beauty in these areas.

Unresolved

Over-spiritualising the matters governed by the planets, or a reluctance to engage with their practical dimensions because they feel too sacred to subject to ordinary life. Can produce a certain unworldliness.

Interpretive contexts

  • A lasting pattern in one person

    Natal chart

A rare and subtle indicator of spiritual maturity or completion in the areas governed by the two planets. Most effective at very tight orbs (under 1°).

  • A moving planet meets a natal one

    Transit

Only considered at very tight orbs. Can coincide with moments of grace, completion, or spiritual recognition.

  • One person’s planet meets another’s

    Synastry

An uncommon but potent indicator of spiritual resonance or a sense of having come together for a sacred purpose.

What the novile means

A novile joins two planets 40° apart, one ninth of the circle. It belongs to the 9th harmonic, and because nine is three times three, harmonic astrologers in John Addey’s line treat it as a relative of the trine: the trine’s ease and enjoyment, worked on until it becomes something the person values and commits to. Older books call it a "spiritual harvest"; that comes from number symbolism, where nine means completion, not from any finding.

In practice, look for where two drives have settled into a lasting arrangement the person enjoys. With Moon novile Saturn, that might be an allotment tended every weekend for fifteen years. Ask what they have stayed with, and what they enjoy more now than at the start.

  • Steadiness found through routine: a nurse with Moon novile Saturn comes to love the rhythm of night shifts that colleagues dread, and after a decade trains new staff in how to manage them.
  • Hospitality that deepens: someone with Venus novile Jupiter runs a monthly supper club for years, and its regulars become the core of their friendships.
  • A voice refined over time: a radio presenter with Mercury novile Neptune spends years learning to describe live music for listeners and becomes known for it.
  • Expecting the reward before the work: a person with Sun novile Jupiter may want recognition for a talent they have not yet practised.
  • Holding life to an ideal: Venus novile Neptune can measure every partner against a picture of perfect love and find each one wanting.
  • Keeping something too precious to share: a gifted amateur may refuse feedback, payment or deadlines because the activity feels too meaningful to expose to ordinary life.

With the Sun or Moon involved, this site allows 2°.

    It counts

36°exact 40°44°
2° with the Sun or Moon1.5° standard0.5° tightThis pair: 39° apart

Divide 360° by nine and each step is exactly 40°. One step is the novile, two steps (80°) the binovile, three steps (120°) the trinovile, which is simply the trine, and four steps (160°) the quadranovile. Past 180° the series mirrors itself, and because the trine belongs to it, harmonic astrologers read the whole family as the trine’s theme developed further.

A mathematical parallel: the Vedic navamsa divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′, which makes it arithmetically a 9th-harmonic chart. Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac and its own rules, so the overlap is arithmetic, not support for any novile reading.

Because 40° is not a multiple of 30°, the novile has no set sign relationship. It links signs one apart, such as Libra (Air, cardinal, yang) and Scorpio (Water, fixed, yin), or two apart, such as 25° Aries and 5° Gemini, Fire and Air that share a polarity. With no standard sign pattern, "out-of-sign" has no meaning here; judge the novile by degree alone. In a birth chart the Sun and Mercury can never form one, since Mercury stays within about 28° of the Sun; Sun–Venus and Mercury–Venus noviles are both possible.

  1. Moon at 5° Libra: Libra begins at 180°, so the longitude is 185°.
  2. Venus at 14° Scorpio: Scorpio begins at 210°, so 210° + 14° = 224°.
  3. Subtract: 224° − 185° = 39°. Measured the other way the gap is 321°, so 39° is the shorter arc.
  4. Compare with the exact angle: 40°00′ − 39°00′ = 1°00′. That difference is the orb.
  5. Check the allowance: the Moon is a luminary, so 2° applies and the novile counts. It would also pass the 1°30′ standard orb, but not the 0°30′ tight orb.

Applying or separating? The Moon is far faster, covering 12–15° a day against roughly 1° for Venus. The Moon is behind and catching up, so the gap is shrinking from 39° toward nothing, which takes it further from 40°. The novile is therefore separating: it was exact about two hours earlier, and in a little over three days the Moon will reach a conjunction with Venus.

The label names the novile’s source: John Addey’s "Harmonics in Astrology" (1976) argued that every aspect is a whole-number division of the circle with its own meaning, and David Hamblin’s "Harmonic Charts" (1983) showed how to read the 9th-harmonic chart.

Other schools give it no place. Hellenistic astrologers configured planets by whole sign, so a Libra–Scorpio novile would have been two signs in aversion, unable to see each other, and an Aries–Gemini one a sextile by sign. William Lilly’s half-orbs for the Moon and Venus add up to about 9½°, which would swallow the decile and semisquare, so moderns keep noviles to 1–2°. Harmonic astrologers skip wheel orbs and look for a conjunction in the 9th-harmonic chart instead. Reinhold Ebertin’s cosmobiology works with the 8th harmonic and does not use the novile.

Natal, transit and synastry at a glance

In a birth chart

With Mars novile Saturn within 0°40′, look for stamina built through steady training: a long-distance walker who adds a few miles every year and has come to enjoy the discipline more than the destination.

As a transit

While transiting Jupiter is within 1° of a novile to your natal Sun, take one step that consolidates a long investment, such as enrolling on the advanced course.

Between two charts

When one person’s Moon noviles the other’s Venus, comfort between them tends to grow through shared habits. After a year, ask whether the routines you have built together still nourish you both.
