“processes information and expresses thoughts”
Mercury governs the cognitive framework, information processing, and expressive articulation. It acts as the intellect's primary interface with reality.

processes information and expresses thoughts
When strained, this can look like a racing, worried mind, thinking about a feeling instead of feeling it, or using words to win an argument rather than to understand.
A tendency, not a verdict: the same drive, pushed or held back. Noticing it is usually the first step back to the directive.
Every planet describes one part of a life. Mercury describes the go-between: the part of you that notices, names, connects and explains. It is how a thought becomes a sentence, how a sentence becomes a deal, and how a confusing situation becomes a plan. Your Mercury sign is the sign Mercury occupied when you were born, and it describes the style of your mind more than its power.
Astrologers read Mercury as thought, language and exchange. It shows how you learn best, what you are curious about, how you speak and write, and how you handle the small practical traffic of life: messages, errands, paperwork, short trips, buying and selling. Where the Sun describes who you are becoming and the Moon what you need, Mercury describes how you make sense of it all and tell other people about it.
Balanced, Mercury looks like a mind that is curious and clear at the same time. Picture a nurse explaining a procedure to a frightened patient: she picks the right words, checks they have landed, and answers the question behind the question. A well-expressed Mercury listens as well as it talks, changes its mind when the facts change, and turns information into something useful. It is often funny, too; wit is Mercury at play.
Strained, Mercury tends to tip one of two ways. One is overdrive: racing thoughts, too many open tabs, talking past people, arguing a point for the pleasure of winning, or worrying a problem in circles at two in the morning. The other is shutdown: going quiet when it matters, avoiding forms and emails until they pile up, or agreeing out loud while disagreeing inside. Both are a signal that the messenger has lost its route, and the remedy is usually simple: slow down, write it down, ask a clear question.
The sign describes how Mercury thinks and speaks. The house describes what it most likes to think and talk about. Because Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, it is always in your Sun sign or one of the two signs either side of it. A Leo Sun can have Mercury in Cancer, Leo or Virgo, never in Aries or Scorpio.
A quick, direct mind that decides first and refines later. You say what you think, often before others have finished their sentence. Debate energises you. The lesson is to hear a full argument before answering, because your first take is fast but not always final.
Mercury's traditional joy. You come across as curious, talkative and alert, and your ideas are part of your identity and first impression.
Astrologers describe some signs as comfortable for a planet (dignities) and others as awkward (debilities). These are not grades of a person. They describe how easily Mercury's style of thinking finds its natural form. A debilitated Mercury often develops a different kind of intelligence, and the effort shows up as hard-won skill.
| Condition | Sign | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Domicile (rulership) | Gemini and Virgo | At home: curious and connective in Gemini, analytical and practical in Virgo. |
| Exaltation | Virgo, traditionally peaking at 15° | Honoured: precision, discernment and useful skill. Mercury is the only planet exalted in a sign it also rules. |
| Detriment | Sagittarius and Pisces, opposite its homes | Working in a foreign style: thinking through belief, intuition or the big picture rather than detail. |
| Fall | Pisces, opposite Virgo | Muted precision: imagination over analysis. Pisces is both detriment and fall, a rare double debility. |
Sect. Hellenistic astrologers divided the planets into a day team led by the Sun and a night team led by the Moon. Mercury belongs to neither permanently; its sect is called common. By the most widely used rule, Mercury is a day planet when it rises before the Sun (a morning star, also called oriental) and a night planet when it sets after the Sun (an evening star, or occidental). In a chart, a Mercury in an earlier zodiac degree than the Sun is a morning star.
Joy. Mercury rejoices in the 1st house, the house of the body and self, which Hellenistic texts link to Mercury as the planet of reason and character. A Mercury there is said to work especially easily.
Motion and cycle. Seen from Earth, Mercury moves anywhere from standstill to about 2° a day and stays close to the Sun, so on average it circles the zodiac in about a year and spends roughly two to four weeks in a sign. Three or four times a year it appears to slow, stop and move backward for about three weeks. This is retrograde motion, an optical effect of Earth and Mercury passing each other in their orbits, not a real reversal. About one person in five is born with Mercury retrograde.
Mercury returns to its natal position roughly once a year, usually near your birthday. In years when it retrogrades over that degree, it can cross it three times, which many astrologers read as a year to revisit an old idea or conversation.
In Mesopotamia the planet was linked to Nabu, the scribe god of writing and wisdom. The Greeks gave it to Hermes, born in a cave on Mount Cyllene, who on his first day invented the lyre from a tortoise shell and stole his brother Apollo's cattle, then talked his way out of trouble. Hermes was messenger of the gods, patron of travellers, merchants and thieves, and guide of souls between worlds. Rome called him Mercury, the god of commerce. Egyptian Thoth, god of writing, was later merged with Hermes as Hermes Trismegistus, the legendary source of the Hermetic texts.
In Hellenistic astrology Mercury signified speech, reasoning, education, writing, accounts and trade, and was described as taking on the colour of whatever planets it was joined to. Modern psychological astrologers kept those meanings and added an inner one: Mercury as the way the mind perceives and names experience. This guide labels which tradition a technique comes from.
Not in itself. Mercury is retrograde about a fifth of the time, and life carries on. Astrologers read it as a period that favours review, revision and reconnection over brand-new launches. Back up files, double-check plans and allow extra time. The practical habits help, and fear does not.
Mercury can be up to about 28° away from the Sun, so it is often in the sign before or after your Sun sign. It can never be more than one sign away. That is why Mercury often explains a Sun sign description that does not quite fit how you talk.
About one in five people are. Astrologers often read it as a mind that works by reflection: thinking things through privately, returning to ideas, and saying things in an original way. It is not a disadvantage. Many such people say they understand things best on the second pass.
Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo in both traditional and modern astrology, and is exalted in Virgo. It is in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, and in fall in Pisces.
The stretch of zodiac Mercury covers three times: forward, backward and forward again. The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct; the post-shadow ends when it passes the degree where it turned retrograde. Each lasts roughly two weeks.
