Water is one of the four classical elements, alongside Fire, Earth and Air. It belongs to Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. These signs sit 120° apart, a Trine, forming the Water triplicity: three signs that meet the world first through feeling.
As a symbol, Water describes emotional response, attachment, memory and the sense of what is happening beneath the surface. It is empathy, loyalty, imagination and the need to belong somewhere and to someone. Think of the friend who notices you are not yourself before you have said a word, and simply sits with you. That is Water.
Water is an inward-gathering, Yin element. It absorbs, holds and responds rather than broadcasts, and it tends to learn through experience and relationship. Each Water sign has a different modality: Cancer is cardinal, Scorpio is fixed and Pisces is mutable. So one Water person builds a home, another commits to a bond with great intensity, and another dissolves the walls between people.

Worked example. Imagine a chart with the Sun in Aries, the Moon in Cancer and Scorpio rising, with Venus in Pisces. The identity is Fire: direct, brave, quick. But the Moon, Ascendant and Venus are all Water. Others first meet someone intense and private (Scorpio rising). Emotionally they need closeness, family and a safe base (Moon in Cancer), and they love tenderly and with great devotion (Venus in Pisces, exalted). A reasonable first reading: "acts boldly, feels deeply, protects the people they love fiercely."
The Water here sits in needs, presence and love rather than in the Sun. That is why someone with an Aries Sun can be far more emotionally attuned than their Sun sign description suggests.
Astrology describes symbolic tendencies, not guaranteed abilities. Water is associated with attentiveness to mood, memory and unspoken cues, which can feel like knowing things in advance. It is better understood as sensitivity that is worth checking against the facts.
