Core essence

Taurus represents the physical world in its most beautiful and stable form. They are the builders and the keepers of comfort, find joy in the senses, and possess an unwavering loyalty that grounds everyone around them.

Archetype

The Builder

You value empirical evidence over theory. If you can’t touch it, see it, or quantify it, you are skeptical. Your "stubbornness" is actually high cognitive persistence—once you verify a fact or method is sound, you stick to it to maximize efficiency.

Primary goal
To build sustainable systems and accumulate resources (emotional or material) that last.
Dominant fear
Scarcity, sudden instability, or being rushed into poor quality.
Core desire
Stability and sensory satisfaction.
Strategy
Methodical progress, risk aversion, and utilizing the five senses to verify reality.

Strengths

  • Sustainment and endurance
  • Methodical execution
  • Sensory awareness and appreciation

Weaknesses

  • Inertia and resistance to change
  • Over-attachment to comfort
  • Slowness to adapt to novelty

The path of Earth

Foundation

“You are the bedrock. Your earth doesn't shift—it anchors. You build structures meant to last, accumulating value through patience and consistency. When others chase what's urgent, you invest in what endures. Your stability becomes the ground others stand on.”

What Earth means
Earth is the grounding foundation of reality and the manifest world. It represents the stability, endurance, and physical forms that allow life to take root and flourish.
The growth path
Learn that the ground sometimes needs to shift for new growth to emerge.

Taurus in love, work and life

How Taurus tends to pair with other signs, where it does its best work, and what it brings to relationships.

Easiest flow

The same or a complementary element, joined by a trine or a sextile. These pairings tend to feel natural from both sides.

Growth pairings

Signs in square or opposition. More friction, more to learn, and often strong attraction.

Relationship style

Taurus seeks depth, loyalty, and sensory richness in relationships. Earth signs and water signs who value stability and consistent presence make ideal matches. Taurus will invest heavily in relationships but requires security before fully committing.

No pairing is good or bad on Sun signs alone; the whole chart of both people matters more. See Taurus with every sign

The foundations of Taurus

Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac, covering 30° to 60° of the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent yearly path. Its symbol is the Bull, and the glyph ♉︎ is a circle crowned by a curved crescent: a bull's head and horns. Many astrologers also read it as a crescent Moon resting on a full circle, a fitting image for the sign where the Moon is exalted. Taurus is an Earth sign, so it trusts what is tangible, practical and proven. It is fixed, the modality that sustains and protects what has already begun, and it is Yin, meaning its energy gathers inward and receives. Together these make Taurus the most settled sign of the zodiac: the field after planting, quietly growing.

The Sun is in Taurus from roughly April 20 to May 20. The exact dates shift by about a day from year to year, because the calendar and the solar year do not line up perfectly. If you were born near either end, you have a "cusp" birthday, but there is no blended cusp sign: the Sun is always in exactly one sign at a given moment. Your birth year, time and place settle which one.

Taurus is ruled by Venus in both traditional (Hellenistic and medieval) and modern astrology, so Venus is at home here, with full access to its resources of pleasure, value and attraction. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, traditionally at 3°: an honoured guest whose need for comfort and security is especially well supported. Mars is in detriment, because Taurus is opposite Scorpio, a sign Mars rules: its urgency feels slowed and out of place. Modern astrologers, who give Scorpio to Pluto, also list Pluto in detriment here. No planet is in fall in Taurus in the traditional scheme, because nothing is exalted in the opposite sign.

What Taurus means: gifts, shadow and the opposite sign

Taurus is the urge to make life real and to make it last. Picture someone who has kept the same sourdough starter alive for nine years, knows exactly which bakery sells the best butter and would rather have one excellent wool coat than five cheap ones. That is Taurus: patient, physical, discerning and loyal to what has proved its worth. Taurus trusts what it can touch, taste and test over time. Where it falls in a chart, you tend to build slowly, value quality over speed and protect what you have grown.

  • Steadiness. Taurus keeps going when the novelty wears off. It is the friend who still waters the shared allotment in August, long after everyone else has stopped coming.
  • Sensory intelligence. Taurus notices texture, flavour, sound and comfort. It can make a room feel calm with a lamp, a blanket and the right music.
  • Loyalty. Once Taurus commits to a person, a job or a place, it stays. Its reliability is a form of love.
  • Practical resourcefulness. Taurus knows what things cost and what they are worth. It can stretch a budget, mend a chair or grow herbs on a windowsill.
  • Calm under pressure. When others panic, Taurus tends to slow down and deal with what is in front of it, which steadies everyone else.
  • Resistance to change. Taurus may stay in a job, home or relationship long after it has stopped nourishing them, because the known feels safer than the unknown.
  • Possessiveness. The wish to keep what is precious can extend to people, turning care into control without anyone quite meaning it to.
  • Inertia. Comfort is a strength until it becomes a hiding place. A favourite sofa can quietly swallow a whole season of plans.
  • Stubbornness. Once Taurus has decided, new evidence can bounce off it. It is not that Taurus cannot change its mind, only that it wants to do so in its own time.

Taurus sits in opposition to Scorpio, six signs away, and together they form the axis of what is mine and what is shared. Taurus asks "what do I own and enjoy?" while Scorpio asks "what am I willing to merge, transform or let go?" Taurus teaches Scorpio that simple pleasures are enough and that not everything needs to be investigated. Scorpio teaches Taurus that real security comes from being able to lose something and survive, and that intimacy means letting someone in past the garden wall.

Taurus as your Sun, Moon or Rising sign

The same sign speaks differently through different points of the chart. The Sun shows your central purpose, the Moon your emotional needs and instinctive reactions, and the Ascendant the way you meet the world and how others first experience you.

Sun in Taurus

With the Sun in Taurus, you become yourself by building something solid: a skill, a home, savings, a body of work or a circle of people you can rely on. You prefer to move at your own pace and to do things properly. Your confidence grows from proof, so small, repeated successes matter to you more than grand gestures. The work is learning that change can be an investment rather than a threat, and that your worth does not depend on what you own.

Moon in Taurus

The Moon is exalted in Taurus, so this is one of the most emotionally steady placements in astrology. You feel safe through routine, physical comfort, good food, nature and people who are consistent. Your moods tend to change slowly, which makes you a calming presence. When upset, you may withdraw into comfort rather than talk. Name what you need early, because by the time you are visibly unsettled, the feeling has usually been building for weeks.

Taurus rising

When Taurus is on the Ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth and marking the 1st house cusp, you come across as calm, pleasant and unhurried. People often find you reassuring and may be surprised later by how firm you are. Venus, ruler of Taurus, becomes your chart ruler, so its sign, house and aspects describe how you pursue your life. Your growth lies in staying open to change while keeping your steady centre.

Worked example (fictional). Imagine a hypothetical chart with the Sun in Aquarius, the Moon in Taurus and Leo rising. All three are fixed signs, so this person is consistent and hard to move, but each points a different way. The Leo Ascendant makes them warm and visible, the sort of person who hosts the gathering. The Sun in Aquarius says their real purpose is tied to ideas, communities and doing things differently. The Moon in Taurus says that to feel safe, they need a comfortable home, reliable income and simple pleasures. To blend them, ask how each serves the others: an unconventional mission (Aquarius), delivered with flair (Leo), sustained by a well-stocked kitchen and a predictable week (Taurus). Then check Venus, ruler of the Moon's sign: its condition shows how easily that comfort is found.

Origins and mythology of Taurus

Taurus is one of the oldest constellations on record. Babylonian astronomers called it the Bull of Heaven, and in the Epic of Gilgamesh the goddess Ishtar sends that bull down to earth, where Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill it. The constellation contains two famous star clusters, the Pleiades and the Hyades, and the bright red star Aldebaran, the bull's eye. During the fourth and third millennia BCE, the spring equinox lay among these stars, so the bull was associated with the return of spring, ploughing and fertility across the ancient Near East and the Mediterranean.

In Greek myth, the bull is usually Zeus in disguise. He took the form of a beautiful white bull to approach the Phoenician princess Europa, who climbed onto its back while it grazed by the shore; it then swam with her across the sea to Crete. Only the front half of the bull is pictured in the sky, as if it is still rising out of the water. The image fits the sign: a gentle, beautiful creature of great strength, connected with beauty, desire and Venusian charm, which cannot be hurried and does not turn back once it moves.
