The septile joins two planets about 51½° apart. It has no ancient pedigree and no tidy sign relationship; it came into regular use through twentieth-century harmonic astrology. Harmonic astrologers following John Addey and David Hamblin link the 7th harmonic with inspiration, creative imagination and the pull of an ideal, while Dane Rudhyar and later esoteric writers added a vocabulary of destiny. In practice, look for a specific, slightly unusual motivation the person acts on before they can explain it: the accountant who has built scale models of sailing ships every weekend for twenty years.

The septile is one-seventh of 360°: 360 ÷ 7 = 51.428571…°, or 51°25′43″. That is an ordinary rational number, a simple fraction, so the old claim that the septile is a "non-rational" division of the circle is wrong. Two things genuinely set it apart. Seven is the first whole number that does not divide 360 into whole degrees (one to six all do), and the regular heptagon is the first regular polygon that cannot be drawn exactly with compass and straightedge. Johannes Kepler built his aspect theory on constructible figures and rejected the septile partly for that reason.
A harmonic is a whole-number division of the circle: the 4th harmonic gives the square, the 3rd the trine. The 7th gives the septile (51°26′), the biseptile (102°51′) and the triseptile (154°17′); past 180° the series mirrors itself. Because 51½° lies between one and two signs, a septile can link signs one apart, such as Cancer (Water, cardinal) and Leo (Fire, fixed), or two apart, such as 25° Aries and 16° Gemini, both yang. With no standard sign pattern, an "out-of-sign" septile is not a meaningful idea: judge it by degree.
Natal limits: Mercury stays within about 28° of the Sun and Venus within about 47°, so the Sun cannot septile either of them. Mercury and Venus can be up to about 76° apart, so a septile between those two is possible but uncommon.

- Uranus at 22° Leo: that sign starts at 120°, so 120° + 22° = 142°.
- Subtract: 142° − 90° = 52°. The other way round is 308°, so 52° is the shorter arc.
- Compare: 52°00′00″ − 51°25′43″ = 0°34′17″. That difference is the orb.
- Check: the standard orb is 1°30′ and the luminary orb is 2°, so 0°34′ counts comfortably, just outside the 0°30′ tight orb.
The Sun moves about 57′ a day here; Uranus moves a few minutes of arc at most. The slower planet is ahead and the faster one is closing the gap from 52° toward 51°26′, so the septile is applying and becomes exact in about 15 hours, then separates. Many astrologers read applying as a theme still developing and separating as one already lived; note which it is and check it against the person’s story.

The tradition label names three layers: Rudhyar, who wrote about the septile in the 1930s and gave it its language of destiny; Robert Blaschke, a late twentieth-century American teacher who used the series; and the harmonic school of Addey and Hamblin, which reads every aspect as a whole-number division of the circle.
Older schools have no septile. Hellenistic astrologers judged whole-sign configurations, so a Cancer–Leo septile would have been two signs in aversion that cannot see each other, and an Aries–Gemini one simply a sextile by sign. William Lilly’s planet-by-planet orbs suited the Ptolemaic aspects; at a 51° angle the Sun’s half-orb of about 7½° alone would overlap the semisquare, so modern users keep the septile to 1–2°. Harmonic astrologers drop wheel orbs altogether and look for a conjunction in the 7th-harmonic chart. Reinhold Ebertin’s cosmobiology focused on the 8th harmonic and gives the septile no special role.
