What the semisquare means
A semisquare joins two planets about 45° apart: half a square, one eighth of the circle. Where a square tends to bring obvious confrontations, the semisquare usually works through smaller, repeated frictions that accumulate. It is easy to miss in a single day and easy to recognise across a year: the same minor annoyance returns until you change something.
Astrologers who use it read the semisquare as pressure that builds until it is acted on. Picture Mercury semisquare Mars: a person who drafts sharp emails, deletes them, drafts again, and then sends one far harsher than intended after a week of holding back. The useful response is to act early and in proportion, not to wait for the pressure to choose the moment.

The semisquare measures 45°, one eighth of the circle, so it belongs to the 8th harmonic: the series made by halving the square. That family runs 45°, 90°, 135°, 180°, adding the sesquiquadrate at 135° and the opposition at 180°. Harmonic astrologers read the whole series as tension that drives effort; the semisquare and sesquiquadrate are its finer steps.
No fixed sign relationship. Because 45° is one and a half signs, a semisquare can fall between neighbouring signs or signs two apart. Our example joins Gemini (Air, mutable, yang) and Cancer (Water, cardinal, yin), neighbours with nothing in common; Sun at 25° Aries semisquare Moon at 10° Gemini instead links signs two apart, compatible Fire and Air, a sextile by sign. Read the signs individually rather than expecting a set pattern.
Applying or separating? Mars moves about half a degree a day, Saturn a few arcminutes, so Mars is faster. Mars is 44° behind Saturn and still gaining, so the gap is shrinking away from 45°: the aspect is separating, exact roughly two days earlier, and the pair now heads toward a conjunction. If Mars turned retrograde, the gap would widen again and the aspect would re-apply, a common source of repeated passes.
Inner-planet limits. Mercury never gets more than about 28° from the Sun, so a Sun–Mercury semisquare is impossible natally. Venus can reach about 47°, so Sun–Venus semisquares do occur, as do Mercury–Venus ones.

- Not one of Ptolemy’s aspects. It belongs to the expanded aspect set that followed Kepler: his Harmonice Mundi (1619) argued for its partner the sesquiquadrate, and the semisquare entered common use in the early modern period.
Hellenistic astrology had no 45° aspect; it read aspects between whole signs. Lilly-style moieties applied to Ptolemy’s aspects. The semisquare matters most in cosmobiology, Reinhold Ebertin’s school, which works with the 8th-harmonic aspects on a 90° dial alongside midpoints, and in the Uranian (Hamburg) school of Alfred Witte, which uses multiples of 22.5°. Both keep orbs tight, often a degree or two.
