A biquintile links two planets 144° apart, twice the 72° quintile. Both belong to the 5th harmonic, which harmonic astrologers associate with making, technique and personal style. Where the quintile describes the urge to shape something, many modern writers read the biquintile as that urge carried further: a craft applied to other people, to a hard problem or to a cause, often with an unusual angle of approach.

Cut the circle into five arcs of 72° and step across two of them: that is 144°, or two fifths of 360°. The 5th harmonic contains only two distinct angles, the quintile (one step) and the biquintile (two steps); three and four steps give the same two angles measured round the other side.
A 144° span covers four or five signs. Four signs apart is a trine by sign, sharing an element. Five signs apart is a quincunx by sign, linking signs that share neither element nor modality and differ in polarity. For example, 2° Aries and 26° Leo are exactly 144° apart and share the Fire element, while 10° Aries and 4° Virgo are also 144° apart but five signs distant.

- Mercury is at 10° Capricorn. Capricorn starts at 270°, so its longitude is 280°.

Applying or separating? Mercury is the faster planet, often covering one to two degrees a day, while Jupiter moves a fraction of a degree. As Mercury advances from 10° Capricorn, the gap grows from 145° to 146° and beyond, so this biquintile is separating: it was exact when Mercury stood near 9° Capricorn, roughly a day earlier. A retrograde Mercury would close the gap again.
Leo and Capricorn are five signs apart: Fire and Earth, fixed and cardinal, yang and yin. So this biquintile also sits on a quincunx sign relationship, which shapes how the two planets meet.

In Hellenistic practice there is no biquintile, only the relationship between whole signs. When the two signs are five apart, as in our example, those astrologers would say the planets are in aversion: they do not see each other. When the signs are four apart, they would read a trine by sign. Lilly-style moieties were designed for Ptolemy’s aspects, and modern software simply applies a flat orb of about 1–2° to the biquintile.
Harmonic astrologers such as John Addey and David Hamblin read the biquintile within the 5th harmonic chart, where it becomes a conjunction, and they keep natal orbs narrow because the harmonic multiplies them. Ebertin’s cosmobiology largely ignored the 5th harmonic in favour of 45° multiples.
