Myth and history

Venus is the brightest object in the night sky after the Moon, and ancient observers tracked it closely. Babylonian scribes recorded its risings and settings on the Venus Tablet of Ammisaduqa and identified it with Ishtar, the Sumerian Inanna, goddess of love and war. Her myth of descending to the underworld and returning has been read, by some modern writers, as an image of the planet vanishing into the Sun's glare and reappearing.

Early Greeks thought the morning star (Phosphorus, "light-bringer") and the evening star (Hesperus) were two bodies before recognising them as one. The planet was named for Aphrodite, born from the sea foam, Roman Venus. In Hellenistic astrology Venus signified love, marriage, friendship, music and adornment. Modern psychological astrologers kept those themes and added self-worth: the idea that how we value ourselves shapes whom and what we attract.
