The twelve signs
Twelve styles of being, each a blend of element, modality and polarity. New to signs? Start below the cards.

What a zodiac sign is
Seen from Earth, the Sun appears to travel once a year along the same path through the sky, the ecliptic. Astrology divides that circle into twelve equal 30° slices, starting at the March equinox. Each slice is a sign. When we say "the Sun is in Leo", we mean it is passing through the fifth slice, roughly from late July to late August.
A sign describes a style: how something tends to move, speak, want and protect itself. It is not a planet and not a part of life. Planets are the actors (the Moon is feeling, Mercury is thinking, Mars is drive), houses are the stage (the 7th house is partnership, the 10th is public life), and signs are the costume and accent. A Moon in Aries and a Moon in Cancer both describe emotional needs, in very different tones.
Every sign is a combination of three simple ingredients: an element (Fire, Earth, Air or Water), a modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and a polarity (Yang or Yin). No two signs share the same element and modality, which is why there are exactly twelve. Each sign also has a ruling planet, a kind of host whose condition in your chart tells you how that sign's energy is being managed.
The twelve signs at a glance
Read across a row to see a sign's basic make-up. The ruler shown first is the traditional one; three signs gained a modern ruler after the outer planets were discovered, and most astrologers today consult both. Opposite signs share a modality and sit 180° apart, an Opposition, so each pair forms an axis of complementary themes.

Signs, constellations and the two zodiacs
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons: Aries always begins at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox and Capricorn at the December solstice. About two thousand years ago those points lay among the stars the signs are named after. Because Earth's axis slowly wobbles, a motion called precession, the equinox drifts backwards against the stars by about one degree every 72 years. Today the tropical signs and the constellations of the same names are offset by roughly 24°.
The sidereal zodiac, used in Vedic astrology, keeps the signs fixed to the stars instead, so most planets fall about one sign earlier there. Neither system is a mistake; they measure different things, one the cycle of the seasons and the other the background of stars. The constellations themselves are different again: astronomers drew them with unequal boundaries, and the Sun also crosses Ophiuchus, which is a constellation but not a sign. Everything on stars.guide uses the tropical zodiac unless it says otherwise.
Reading the signs in your own chart
- Find the signs of your Sun, Moon and Ascendant. These three describe purpose, needs and first impression.
- Note their elements and modalities. Three placements in one element, or none in another, is worth a sentence in any reading.
- Find the ruler of your Ascendant sign, your chart ruler, and read its sign and house: it tells you how you steer.
- Look at Mercury, Venus and Mars, the personal planets that shape thinking, relating and acting day to day.
- Only then ask where each sign falls among your houses. The sign gives the style; the house gives the area of life.
