A decile joins two planets 36° apart, half of a quintile, which is why it is also called the semi-quintile. It belongs to the 10th harmonic, and ten is five times two. Harmonic astrologers usually read the five as making and style, and the two as effort, contrast or bringing something out into the world. Put together, the decile describes the practical side of craft: the steps that turn a good idea into something that actually works.

Divide 360° by ten and each step is 36°. Count steps around the circle and you meet the whole decile series: one step is the decile, two steps (72°) the quintile, three steps (108°) the tredecile, four steps (144°) the biquintile and five steps (180°) the opposition. So the 10th harmonic contains the whole 5th harmonic plus the angles halfway between.
A 36° span crosses one or two sign boundaries. One sign apart, the signs are neighbours like a semi-sextile by sign, sharing neither element nor modality. Two signs apart gives a sextile by sign, with compatible elements and the same polarity. For instance, 25° Taurus and 1° Cancer are 36° apart, and Earth and Water get along easily.

Applying or separating? The Moon is much faster, about 13° a day against Mercury’s one or two. As the Moon moves forward from 18° Gemini, the gap shrinks from 35° towards 34°, moving away from 36°. So the decile is separating; it was exact roughly two hours earlier, and in about three days the Moon will reach a conjunction with Mercury.
Gemini and Cancer are neighbours: Air and Water, mutable and cardinal, yang and yin. The decile here connects planets in signs that do not share a sign-based relationship, which is common for this aspect.

Hellenistic astrologers had no decile. Reading by whole sign, they would see our Gemini–Cancer example as two planets in aversion, signs that cannot see each other. Later traditional practice, including William Lilly’s moiety system, also centred on Ptolemy’s aspects. Modern astrologers who use the decile tend to allow a small fixed orb of 1–2°, and many software defaults leave it switched off.
Harmonic astrologers study the decile in the 10th harmonic chart, where every orb is multiplied by ten; a 1°30′ natal orb becomes 15°. That is a strong reason to keep the natal orb narrow. Cosmobiology, built on 45° multiples, does not use it.
