Earlier copy called it a "gestating gift"; the usable core is a capacity that grows in stages and is often far stronger at forty than at twenty.

Two ninths of 360° is 80°. The fraction 2/9 cannot be reduced, so the binovile is a true member of the 9th harmonic rather than of a lower one; in a 9th-harmonic chart it shows up as a conjunction, just like the novile. The full series runs novile 40°, binovile 80°, trinovile 120° (the trine) and quadranovile 160°, then mirrors past 180°. On the wheel, 80° sits 8° beyond the quintile and 10° short of the square, so a narrow orb keeps those angles apart.
An 80° gap always spans two or three signs, never one or four. Two signs apart gives a sextile by sign: 1° Aries and 21° Gemini, Fire and Air, both yang. Three apart gives a square by sign with a shared modality, as in the worked example below: Sagittarius (Fire, yang) and Pisces (Water, yin), both mutable. So a binovile never falls between signs in Hellenistic aversion. Without a standard sign pattern, "out-of-sign" does not apply; measure by degree.
Natal limits rule out three pairs. Mercury stays within about 28° of the Sun, Venus within about 47°, and the two inner planets are at most about 76° apart, so Sun–Mercury, Sun–Venus and Mercury–Venus binoviles cannot occur in a birth chart.

Applying or separating? Direct Mercury covers roughly 1° to 1½° a day, while Saturn gains only a few arcminutes. Mercury trails and is closing in, so the gap falls from 81° toward 80°: the binovile is applying and perfects within about a day. Then it separates, and Mercury moves on toward the quintile at 72°. If Mercury were retrograde, as it sometimes is in Sagittarius, the gap would widen and the same contact would be separating.

Addey’s "Harmonics in Astrology" (1976) treated each whole-number division of the circle as a distinct layer of meaning, and the binovile is the second step of the ninth layer. David Hamblin’s "Harmonic Charts" (1983) shows how to read such contacts through the 9th-harmonic chart rather than one aspect at a time.
Older methods see something else. A Hellenistic astrologer, configuring by whole sign, would read our Sagittarius–Pisces pair as a square by sign and give extra weight only to a degree contact within about 3° of the exact square. William Lilly’s planet orbs, averaged for the pair, would give Mercury and Saturn about 8°, which would merge the binovile into the quintile and the square; harmonic users therefore keep 1–2°. Ebertin’s cosmobiology, built on the 8th harmonic, has no binovile.
