What the quintile means
A quintile joins two planets that sit 72° apart, exactly one fifth of the circle. Johannes Kepler argued for it in 1619 because the pentagon, like the triangle and the four-sided figure behind the older aspects, can be drawn with compass and straightedge. Modern harmonic astrologers, following John Addey, associate the number five with making: arranging material, composing, building a technique and putting a personal signature on the result.
In practice, a quintile suggests that two parts of a person combine best inside a form. Take Mercury quintile Mars. The person may not be combative in conversation, yet put them in front of a debate brief or a sharp editorial deadline and words and drive lock together with real skill. So ask where the person already practises something repeatedly, out of interest rather than duty: hobbies, side projects and work they do unusually well.

Divide the 360° circle by five and each step is 72°. That makes the quintile the first step of the 5th harmonic: the family of angles you get by cutting the circle into five equal arcs. Two steps give 144°, the biquintile. Three or four steps simply repeat those two angles measured the other way round, so the 5th harmonic family has only two members.
Because 72° is not a multiple of 30°, the quintile has no set sign relationship. Its two planets usually sit two signs apart, a sextile by sign with compatible elements and the same polarity, or three signs apart, a square by sign sharing a modality. For example, 28° Aries and 10° Cancer are 72° apart, and those two signs are both cardinal.

Applying or separating? Venus is by far the faster planet, moving roughly a degree a day when direct, while Neptune creeps forward by a couple of arcminutes. As Venus advances from 2° Aries, the gap shrinks from 73° towards 72°, so the aspect is applying: it should perfect in about a day and then start separating. If Venus were retrograde, the same picture would run backwards.
Aries (Fire) and Gemini (Air) are two signs apart, so a whole-sign reader would call this pair a sextile; a degree-based harmonic reader calls it a quintile.

Hellenistic astrology never used the quintile. Its astrologers configured planets by whole sign, with a degree-based connection within about 3° counting as especially strong, so they would read our example as a sign-based sextile. William Lilly averaged each planet’s half-orb, or moiety, for the Ptolemaic aspects; no such scheme is in wide use for the quintile, so modern software applies a flat 1–2°.
Harmonic astrologers in the line of John Addey and David Hamblin prefer narrow natal orbs because the 5th harmonic chart multiplies every orb by five. Reinhold Ebertin’s cosmobiology concentrated on the 45° family of angles, so the quintile plays little part in that method.
