Origins and mythology of Pisces

The stars of Pisces were known to Babylonian astronomers, who saw this part of the sky differently. In star lists such as the MUL.APIN compendium, the region held the Tails, ribbons or cords joining two separate figures: the Great Swallow and the goddess Anunitum. Greek astronomers turned the two figures into fish but kept the connecting cord, and the star Alrescha, “the cord” in Arabic, still marks the knot where the two lines meet. The constellation sits in a watery stretch of sky alongside the Water-Bearer, the Sea-Goat and the Whale.

In Greek myth, as told by Ovid and Hyginus, Aphrodite and her son Eros were fleeing the monster Typhon beside the river Euphrates. They leapt into the water and became, or were carried to safety by, two fish, tied together so they would not lose each other in the current. The fish were also sacred to the Syrian goddess Atargatis, and the story probably travelled west with her worship. The image fits the sign closely. Two fish swimming in opposite directions, held by one cord, mirror the Piscean pull between this world and the beyond, between self and others.
