What the 7th house covers

The 7th house starts at the Descendant, the degree of the zodiac that was setting on the western horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It sits exactly opposite the Ascendant. If the Ascendant marks where you rise into view, the Descendant marks where you meet someone standing across from you, which is why this house is about other people in their most direct form.

In everyday terms the 7th house describes the significant other: the person you commit to, the business partner you sign with, the rival who openly challenges you and the professional you hire to work with you one to one. Its key word is "with". Anything you do face to face with one other person, on equal terms and with some kind of agreement, tends to belong here.

  • Committed partners and marriage: long-term relationships, spouses, life partners and what you look for in them.
  • Business partners: co-founders, joint ventures and anyone you share a formal stake with.
  • Contracts and agreements: promises made with another party, negotiations and the terms you settle on.
  • Open rivals: competitors and opponents who face you directly, as opposed to hidden enemies.
  • One-to-one relationships: clients, consultants, counsellors, lawyers and other professionals you work with individually.

Picture three people choosing a partner. One keeps falling for confident, take-charge types and slowly realises they are attracted to qualities they have not yet claimed for themselves. Another is happiest in a partnership of equals with a clear division of jobs. A third finds that their most important one-to-one relationship is a business partnership that has lasted longer than any romance. All three are living through their 7th house.

Hellenistic astrologers called this place Dysis, "Setting", after the western horizon where the Sun, Moon and stars go down. It was one of the four angular houses, the pivots of the chart. Ancient texts gave it marriage and partnership, and some authors also connected it with the later part of life, by analogy with the setting Sun. Modern astrologers add the idea of projection: the 7th house often describes traits we look for, or meet, in other people because we have not fully owned them in ourselves.

How to read your 7th house

You can read the 7th house with the same routine as the other houses. Here the result is a portrait of the people you are drawn to, the way you behave in partnership and the kind of agreements you make.

  1. Find the sign on the 7th house. It is always the sign opposite your rising sign: Aries rising has Libra on the 7th, Taurus rising has Scorpio, and so on. A Fire sign here is drawn to lively, bold partners; an Earth sign to steady, practical ones; an Air sign to good conversation; a Water sign to emotional closeness.
  2. Find the ruler of that sign. For Cancer on the 7th, the ruler is the Moon; for Pisces, look at Jupiter (traditional) and Neptune (modern).
  3. See where that ruler sits. Its house often shows where you meet partners or what partnership is built around. A 7th-house ruler in the 10th house suggests meeting a partner through work or partnering in a public role; in the 9th, partners from another culture or met while travelling or studying.
  4. Note any planets in the 7th house. Each describes a quality you meet in partners or bring to partnership. Jupiter here tends to attract generous partners; Saturn, serious and committed ones; Uranus, unconventional relationships that need room.

What if the 7th house is empty? It does not mean you will be alone or that relationships do not matter to you. Many people in long, happy partnerships have no planets here. An empty 7th is described by its sign and ruler, and relationship themes may also show up strongly through Venus, the Moon or other houses.

The 1st–7th house axis

The 7th house sits opposite the 1st house, and together they make up the horizon axis: the Ascendant in the east and the Descendant in the west. This line divides the chart into the half above the horizon and the half below it. On one side is the self that acts alone; on the other is the self that meets, chooses and negotiates with someone else.

Because the two signs on this axis are opposite, they often describe complementary qualities. A Leo rising, who naturally takes the spotlight, has Aquarius on the 7th and may be drawn to cooler, more independent partners who keep them honest. Healthy relationships usually need both ends: a clear sense of yourself and a real willingness to meet the other person halfway.
