Sect and joy. Hellenistic astrologers sorted the seven visible planets into a day team and a night team, and gave each a house where it "rejoices". Chiron has neither a sect nor a joy. Myth and history

In Greek myth Chiron was unlike the other centaurs, who were known for brawling. He was the son of Kronos, the Greek counterpart of Saturn, and the nymph Philyra, and he was wise, gentle and learned in medicine, music, hunting and prophecy. Heroes were sent to his cave on Mount Pelion to be taught, among them Asclepius, who became the god of medicine, Achilles and Jason.

His best-known story concerns an injury he could not cure. During a fight between Heracles and the centaurs, one of Heracles' poisoned arrows struck Chiron by accident. Being immortal, he could not die, and his own medicine could not heal him. In the usual telling he gave up his immortality in an exchange that freed Prometheus, and was placed among the stars.

The astronomer Charles Kowal discovered the body on 1 November 1977 and named it after the centaur. Astrologers took it up quickly, and books by writers such as Barbara Hand Clow and Melanie Reinhart in the 1980s built the modern reading of Chiron as the "wounded healer", a phrase modern psychological astrologers borrowed from depth psychology.
